This course provides an in-depth exploration of malformations of cortical development (MCD), with a focus on focal cortical dysplasias (FCD). Participants will learn an overview of the electrophysiology and updated International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) classification of FCD and other MCD. There will be a review of updates in the genetic underpinnings that contribute to these conditions, particularly in relation to underlying epilepsy. The course will also cover the neuroimaging characteristics of MCD, specifically equipping learners with an approach of how to identify FCD on MRI. Additionally, recent advancements in pre-surgical investigations and management strategies, including surgical resection and neurostimulation, will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the electrophysiology and classification of malformations of cortical development (MCD), with a focus on focal cortical dysplasias (FCD)
  • Identify current understanding of the genetics underlying various MCD, and appreciate advances in the understanding of genetic underpinnings of FCD, particularly as they relate to epilepsy
  • Recognize various neuroimaging presentations of MCDs and be able to develop an approach to the identification of FCD on MRI
  • Understand recent advances in the pre-surgical investigation and approach to management, including surgical resection and neurostimulation, as it applies to FCD
