CNS vasculitis and autoimmune encephalitis represent real diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The full spectrum of clinical manifestations and investigation results must be considered to establish the diagnosis and exclude several other conditions that are more common and for which immunosuppression is not indicated. Treatment of CNS vasculitis and autoimmune encephalitis must balance control of inflammation and the risk of adverse events. This session provides a practical update on the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to CNS vasculitis and autoimmune encephalitis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Diagnose CNS vasculitis and autoimmune encephalitis
  • Exclude potential mimickers
  • Initiate treatment of CNS vasculitis and autoimmune encephalitis based on recent advances
  • Diagnose and treat acute symptomatic seizures secondary to autoimmune encephalitis and autoimmune-associated epilepsy
  • Recognize common cognitive presentations in autoimmune encephalitis
  • Educate patients and their caregivers on expectations and outcomes
