Neurophysiology (CSCN) Day: Autonomic Neurology

Participants will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The course will also explore diagnostic methods used to assess autonomic function, including tilt table testing and other diagnostics. Finally, diagnosis and treatment strategies for common conditions including:orthostatic intolerance, essential orthostatic hypotension, and POTS will be discussed with aim of equipping participants of the session with a strategy to approach such patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the anatomic, functional and neurochemical organisation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) Understand the ANS’s effect on target organs Identify core symptoms of autonomic failure
  • Understand the purpose and importance of autonomic function testing. Describe key diagnostic tests, including tilt table testing, Valsalva maneuver, and heart rate variability analysis. Interpret basic test results to identify autonomic dysfunction.
  • Recognize the clinical presentations of orthostatic intolerance, including orthostatic hypotension and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Identify non-pharmacological approaches to help manage orthostatic hypotension. Understand the pharmacological options available for treating orthostatic hypotension. Explain non-pharmacological interventions for POTS, including exercise, volume expansion, and compression garments.
